New Jersey Charges 11 Reputed Genovese Crime Family Members, Associates
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Eleven reputed members and associates of the Genovese crime family are facing charges in New Jersey.
Acting state Attorney General John Hoffman announced details of the arrests Tuesday during a news conference in Newark. Ten of the suspects are from New Jersey; the other is a New York City resident.
The attorney general’s office alleges the suspects reaped millions of dollars through loan sharking, sports gambling, unlicensed check-cashing and money laundering. They say the loan-sharking operation brought in more than $1 million in illegal interest each year.
